Leopard Gecko Care Guide

Hi there leopard gecko lovers!

Here’s a guest post all about leopard geckos: where they are from, their natural habitat and a typical leopard gecko life span.

Read the guest article..Enjoy!:

Leopard geckos, Eublepharis macularius, are popular in the pet trade due to their wide variation of color patterns commonly the yellow and white with black spots. These nocturnal type of lizards are natives in Southern Central Asia. Leopard geckos are commonly compared to their look-alike, the fat-tailed geckos.

Leopard geckos have the average size of 8 or 9 inches long and can live for up to 20 years or more. They are ground dwellers and unlike other geckos, they don’t have the specialized scales in their toes which unable them to climb upside down. What they have are eyelids which, of course, are not common to some geckos.

You may be one of the so many people who got interested of having a leopard gecko as pet. If so, you must first know some basic things about them. The things you will about to know will include its proper enclosure, behavior, main diet and others which are related to the leopard geckos.

First, when buying, ensure that you select the gecko very well. The gecko must be in good condition, if so you may now proceed in providing an enclosure for your pet. It is appropriate if you you will provide a housing which is big enough for your pet to roam around and do its normal activities. A 15-20 gallon tank can accommodate for up to 3 geckos. As for the substrate, there is no required type so you may use sand or paper towels. Sands are much preferable to add some natural look inside the enclosure. In addition, you may also put some logs and rocks for decorations. Hiding area is must also for your pet to sleep in. Temperature gradient must be maintained in 88F during the day while 75F during the night. UVB with full spectrum light is also essential and must be turned on for about 10 to 12 hours everyday. As for their food, they are insectivores so it is best if you provide some gut-loaded crickets, mealworms or waxworms. Geckos do require two supplementary diet also, first is the calcium supplement which must be given in regular meals and then secondly, the multivitamin supplement which must be given at least once or twice a week. With regards in giving some water to drink, you may use a shallow dish. Remember to change the water in the dish regularly. For additional safety precaution, wash your hands before and after handling your pet to avoid any infectious disease. With the maintenance of the enclosure, just clean it at least once a week. Be watchful also with the health condition of your pet.

Pets are indeed so great to have in our life, but it is also a huge responsibility that might take effect on lifetime. Never ever decide on buying some exotic pet just for fun. Think it over and over again if you can comply all the requirements of being an exotic pet owner

More leopard gecko care | your leopard gecko cage temperature and using a thermometer

This video, created by ExpertVillage talks about the temperature of your leopard gecko vivarium. The temperature is very important. You need to check the temperature inside your leopard gecko vivarium or habitat often…on a daily basis when you are first starting out, and then maybe once every couple of days or so or with a change in the weather.

You will need to check the temperature in two areas of the vivarium..the daylight area (hotter…where your heat pad is) and the night area (cooler). Ideally, have two thermometers. The video gives two sample thermometers..one slightly bigger. The great thing is that these specially made thermometers can show the highest and lowest temperature during a particular time frame, so you don’t need to check it all the time, just once a day. You need a temperature of around 95-100 degrees fahrenheit in the hotter areas and around 80-85 in the cooler areas. The range of temperatures is called the temperature gradient…from hot to cold.

Hope this helps. Ensuring your leopard gecko is not too cold and not too hot, and has two different areas, one hot and one cooler to go to will help greatly in its well being and health. It’s worth investing in two thermometers..they are inexpensive, available online or from any good pet store and can save stress and discomfort.

Background info about leopard geckos. Leopard geckos are one of the oldest and most primitive forms of gecko

SOME BACKGROUND INFO ABOUT LEOPARD GECKOS It’s always useful to know a little bit of background into your chosen pet. This way, you can understand why they act in a certain way, or why they prefer one type of habitat to another. Leopard geckos are one of the most early and primitive forms of gecko. They are part of the Eubleparidae subfamily. This means that that they are terrestrial animals which means that they live on the ground rather than in trees or in houses.

Leopard geckos are distinctive in part because of their moveable eyelids. Look closely at your gecko pet, notice how the lower lid moves up, instead of both lids moving, or the upper lid moving down. That gives their eyes their popular hypnotic quality and is one of the reasons for their popularity..you can just stare at them for hours.

These geckos originated from parts of Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan, even reaching into the north-west part of India. The conditions can be harsh in these areas, with a lot of wind, including fierce whirlwinds, intense heat and lack of water.

Because of the fierce heat and conditions in their native habitat, leopard geckos used to sleep mostly in the day to avoid the heat. They take shelter and protection under rocks, stones or ledges.People think they come from desert areas, but in fact it’s mostly dry mud areas and even low grassy regions too.

They come out at night to eat small insects and worms.

How to Care for Gecko Lizards : How to Heat Your Leopard Gecko Habitats

Here’s a useful video on how to heat gecko habitats. This guy suggests using a normal everyday heat pad. As we know, the temperature of your terrarium is really important since leopard geckos are cold blooded reptiles and therefore can’t regulate heat from within. Some of the tips include using a timer for your heat pad and only placing your heat pad on a section of the leopard gecko vivarium so they can escape the heat if they want to. He recommends using a regular spotlight, but I think you should buy a specialist one from a pet store. Take a look!

How to handle leopard geckos | leopard gecko handling tips

This kid is awesome. He has two leopard geckos as far as I know. One called Yoshi and the other called Daisy and I love his regular youtube video updates on the progress of his leopard geckos from hatchling to adults.

In this video below, tubbysnake3 teaches you how to handle a leopard gecko. As he says, there are three types of leopard gecko;

1. The sweet calm type who love being held

2. The type who don’t mind being held but would much rather run around

3. The feisty grumpy leopard geckos who prefer not to be touched and might try to bite

When you first pick up a leopard gecko, just scoop them up in your hands and be gentle, allow them to crawl around your hands and be sure not to touch or pull on their tail. You can stroke them, but if they don’t seem to like it, it’s best to put them back into the vivarium. Remember to have clean hands and wash your hands after handling.

Watch the video, the kid is just too charming and filled with personality…
