Life at the zoo. Lea the Leopard Gecko’s nice little life

I really like to read about other people’s leopard gecko pets and their experiences with them.
Seacoastonline provide regular news and postings about the animals at the zoo. Two of their animals who seem to be real personalities include Sydney the bearded dragon and Lea the leopard gecko. The winters are cold so both Sydney and Lea have an instinct to brumate, which is a type of hibernation. The article is really cute as they obviously think of their animals like humans. For example, they let Sydney watch TV!

Introducing a friendly leopard gecko named Dagon.

I love looking at other people’s leopard geckos. This person on youtube has posted a video (no audio) simply introducing his leopard gecko called Dagon. Dagon the leopard gecko seems really friendly, the owner can lightly stroke, pet and play with him. He’s also pretty easy to feed by the looks of it.

How to Care for Gecko Lizards : How to Heat Your Leopard Gecko Habitats

Here’s a useful video on how to heat gecko habitats. This guy suggests using a normal everyday heat pad. As we know, the temperature of your terrarium is really important since leopard geckos are cold blooded reptiles and therefore can’t regulate heat from within. Some of the tips include using a timer for your heat pad and only placing your heat pad on a section of the leopard gecko vivarium so they can escape the heat if they want to. He recommends using a regular spotlight, but I think you should buy a specialist one from a pet store. Take a look!

How to Care for Gecko Lizards : How to handle your leopard gecko

Here’s a useful video from expertvillage on how to handle your leopard gecko. Leopard geckos are pretty easy to handle. They are docile and most of them don’t mind being handled. Be gentle with them, especially the tail and if you sense any nervousness or agitation, put them back in their viviarium straightaway. Go with the flow…if they are crawling around your hand, move your hand accordingly. Relax, don’t be too nervous but be aware of your geckos stress levels and you should be fine.

This is not mentioned in the video but one more tip: make sure your hands are clean and be careful of any overpowering fragrances or smells. And wash your hands always after handling your leopard gecko.

Happy gecko viewing as always!

NEW SPECIES PHOTOS: New species of Leopard Gecko from National Geographic

HOT LEOPARD GECKO NEWS folks!

National Geographic has posted a photo of a new leopard gecko species. Discovered only Cat Ba Island National Park in Vietnam. It’s now being called a Cat Ba leopard gecko. Its’ one of more than 160 species found in 2008 in the Greater Mekong area around Vietnam. This Cat Ba National Park has moist tropical forests that create a unique environment. These animals probably evolved over the last 7,000 to 8,000 years and because it’s an island, they evolved separately and uniquely most likely.

By classifying these stunning cat ba leopard geckos as rare and endangered, hopefully they can be preserved and kept safe.

Newly discovered leopard gecko was found by accident

The Daily Telegraph has more on the newly discovered species of leopard gecko called the cat ba leopard gecko. It talks about the new species of gecko with leopard patterned skin and bright orange eyes.

The Close Encounter WWF report said 100 plants, 28 fish, 18 reptiles, 14 amphibians, two mammals and the Nonggang babbler bird, which was seen walking over rocks but rarely flying or in trees, were found for the first time in 2008 in this region of northern Vietnam.

Among the plant discoveries were two wild bananas, six orchids and 27 new palm trees, while the new animals included seven species of snake, a bat and a shrew.

The new discoveries add to the wealth of wildlife including the Javan rhino, Indochinese tiger and the Irrawaddy dolphin found in the region, where more than 1,000 species have been discovered in the past decade.

Scientists said there is so much wildlife that some of last year’s discoveries – such as the tiger-striped pitviper – were made entirely by accident by researchers exploring the region which spans Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam and the south western Chinese province of Yunnan.

Dr Lee Grismer, of La Sierra University in California, said: ”We were engrossed in trying to catch a new species of gecko when my son pointed out that my hand was on a rock mere inches away from the head of a pitviper.

”We caught the snake and the gecko, and they both proved to be new species.”
