Leopard Gecko Care Guide

Hi there leopard gecko lovers!

Here’s a guest post all about leopard geckos: where they are from, their natural habitat and a typical leopard gecko life span.

Read the guest article..Enjoy!:

Leopard geckos, Eublepharis macularius, are popular in the pet trade due to their wide variation of color patterns commonly the yellow and white with black spots. These nocturnal type of lizards are natives in Southern Central Asia. Leopard geckos are commonly compared to their look-alike, the fat-tailed geckos.

Leopard geckos have the average size of 8 or 9 inches long and can live for up to 20 years or more. They are ground dwellers and unlike other geckos, they don’t have the specialized scales in their toes which unable them to climb upside down. What they have are eyelids which, of course, are not common to some geckos.

You may be one of the so many people who got interested of having a leopard gecko as pet. If so, you must first know some basic things about them. The things you will about to know will include its proper enclosure, behavior, main diet and others which are related to the leopard geckos.

First, when buying, ensure that you select the gecko very well. The gecko must be in good condition, if so you may now proceed in providing an enclosure for your pet. It is appropriate if you you will provide a housing which is big enough for your pet to roam around and do its normal activities. A 15-20 gallon tank can accommodate for up to 3 geckos. As for the substrate, there is no required type so you may use sand or paper towels. Sands are much preferable to add some natural look inside the enclosure. In addition, you may also put some logs and rocks for decorations. Hiding area is must also for your pet to sleep in. Temperature gradient must be maintained in 88F during the day while 75F during the night. UVB with full spectrum light is also essential and must be turned on for about 10 to 12 hours everyday. As for their food, they are insectivores so it is best if you provide some gut-loaded crickets, mealworms or waxworms. Geckos do require two supplementary diet also, first is the calcium supplement which must be given in regular meals and then secondly, the multivitamin supplement which must be given at least once or twice a week. With regards in giving some water to drink, you may use a shallow dish. Remember to change the water in the dish regularly. For additional safety precaution, wash your hands before and after handling your pet to avoid any infectious disease. With the maintenance of the enclosure, just clean it at least once a week. Be watchful also with the health condition of your pet.

Pets are indeed so great to have in our life, but it is also a huge responsibility that might take effect on lifetime. Never ever decide on buying some exotic pet just for fun. Think it over and over again if you can comply all the requirements of being an exotic pet owner

Leopard Gecko Care Tips : sample leopard gecko housing

Here’s another YouTube video, also from a young boy by the youthful sound of his voice but it’s cute and interesting at the same time. He takes you on a tour of his leopard gecko vivarium…showing the rocks, heating pad, water.

Here are some key tips when it comes to creating the perfect leopard gecko housing

  • Have water available 24-7
  • Have a cooler and a hotter area of your vivarium so your leopard gecko can cool herself down or warm herself up as required.
  • You can decorate your leopard gecko housing with rocks you’ve picked up from outside but be sure to clean them thoroughly. The rocks you’ve bought from a reputable pet store have usually been well cleaned.

Many thanks to Kpilot786457 for producing this video. Although it’s been filmed hand-held style on a little mini-camera, I’m always curious to see other people’s leopard gecko housing, so I think it’s worth a view from that point of view. Happy viewing!!

By there way, here’s a link to another video showing some extremely unusual leopard gecko housing, including the use of an old iphone box as a shelter!

Introducing a friendly leopard gecko named Dagon.

I love looking at other people’s leopard geckos. This person on youtube has posted a video (no audio) simply introducing his leopard gecko called Dagon. Dagon the leopard gecko seems really friendly, the owner can lightly stroke, pet and play with him. He’s also pretty easy to feed by the looks of it.

How to handle leopard geckos | leopard gecko handling tips

This kid is awesome. He has two leopard geckos as far as I know. One called Yoshi and the other called Daisy and I love his regular youtube video updates on the progress of his leopard geckos from hatchling to adults.

In this video below, tubbysnake3 teaches you how to handle a leopard gecko. As he says, there are three types of leopard gecko;

1. The sweet calm type who love being held

2. The type who don’t mind being held but would much rather run around

3. The feisty grumpy leopard geckos who prefer not to be touched and might try to bite

When you first pick up a leopard gecko, just scoop them up in your hands and be gentle, allow them to crawl around your hands and be sure not to touch or pull on their tail. You can stroke them, but if they don’t seem to like it, it’s best to put them back into the vivarium. Remember to have clean hands and wash your hands after handling.

Watch the video, the kid is just too charming and filled with personality…

Leopard gecko eating | meet a leopard gecko who had a (literally) long lunch and nearly paid the price

Wow, here’s a gutsy little leopard gecko.

The New Zealand Herald News are reporting that staff at Ti Point Reptile Park saw what appeared to be the back legs of a cricket sticking out of their leopard gecko’s mouth. They simply thought the gecko was finishing off his favorite food.

Then they took a closer look.

It turns out that the ravenous and adventurous gecko  had just devoured a large centipede and was having problems swallowing it. Staff considered removing it and decided it was best to wait a day to see if the gecko would digest her meal by herself. The gecko was 10 years old and in good health.

They next day, they discovered that the leopard gecko had regurgitated the centipede – in once piece. The centipede was 160 mm long, and the gecko was only 150 mm long!! Can you imagine eating something that is longer than you! She must have had a monster appetite!

The gecko was lucky to have got to the centipede first as the centipede was capable of killing a small lizard.

Since the gecko has poor eyesight and is quite primitive, maybe that’s the reasons she thought herself capable of devouring an animal longer than herself.

Mr Borich who works at the Reptile Park thinks that they are not the most intelligent creatures around:

“When you go in to feed them, they will go for your foot rather than the food you are bringing to them.”

Talk about literally biting off more than you can chew!!

An interesting story. Click here if you want to read the whole article including photos of the gecko and the sorry centipede.

FAMOUS GECKO QUOTES. Did GECKO really say that?

CONFESSION: This post isn’t really about leopard geckos at all, but hey…

I just watched Wall Street again on DVD. Love that film. Oliver Stone used to be such a great film maker, why doesn’t he make them like this any more? While I’m ranting…why doesn’t Eddy Murphy, Dennis Miller and that other Dennis guy who used to rant on MTV do stand up any more?

Anyhow…my favorite Gordon Gecko quotes from Wall Street by the formerly great director Oliver Stone. I have to say that I googled these quotes, I’m not going to pause the DVD and write them down…that’s the kind of geeky stuff my brother does.  So here we go:

1. If you’re not inside, you’re outside
2. Lunch is for wimps
3. You stop sending me information and you start getting me some
4. There’s no nobility in poverty
5. Greed is good, greed is right, greed works.
6. Now you’re not naive enough to think that we’re living in a democracy, are you, buddy? It’s the free market and you’re part of it
7. When I get hold of the son of a bitch who leaked this, I’m gonna tear his eyeballs out and I’m gonna such his *bleep* skull
8. It’s not a question of enough. It’s a zero sum game, somebody wins, somebody loses. Money itself isn’t lost or made, it’s simply transferred from one perception to another.
9. Right in the *bleep* you *bleeping bleeping bleeping bleep*!
10. If you need a friend, get a dog
11. This is the kid, calls me 59 days in a row, wants to be a player. There ought to be a picture of you in the dictionary under persistence, kid
12. It’s all about buck, kid. The rest is conversation.

GECKO LOVE!

What is that weird noise? Leopard gecko care

Leopard geckos never seize to surprise. They can do the funniest things (have you ever seen a leopard gecko crawl upside down, Spiderman style at the top of his cage and then land a perfect sommersault?), and they can make the strangest noises.

If you ever hear a leo making a frog-like noise (I kid you not!), it’s usually because she’s unhappy in some way. Maybe you interrupted her flow, or she doesn’t like the way you poke her like that. It’s nothing to be scared about, but it is really quite strange when you hear it for the first time let me tell you!
