Leopard geckos, Eublepharis macularius, are popular in the pet trade due to their wide variation of color patterns commonly the yellow and white with black spots. These nocturnal type of lizards are natives in Southern Central Asia. Leopard geckos are commonly compared to their look-alike, the fat-tailed geckos.
Leopard geckos have the average size of 8 or 9 inches long and can live for up to 20 years or more. They are ground dwellers and unlike other geckos, they don’t have the specialized scales in their toes which unable them to climb upside down. What they have are eyelids which, of course, are not common to some geckos.
You may be one of the so many people who got interested of having a leopard gecko as pet. If so, you must first know some basic things about them. The things you will about to know will include its proper enclosure, behavior, main diet and others which are related to the leopard geckos.
First, when buying, ensure that you select the gecko very well. The gecko must be in good condition, if so you may now proceed in providing an enclosure for your pet. It is appropriate if you you will provide a housing which is big enough for your pet to roam around and do its normal activities. A 15-20 gallon tank can accommodate for up to 3 geckos. As for the substrate, there is no required type so you may use sand or paper towels. Sands are much preferable to add some natural look inside the enclosure. In addition, you may also put some logs and rocks for decorations. Hiding area is must also for your pet to sleep in. Temperature gradient must be maintained in 88F during the day while 75F during the night. UVB with full spectrum light is also essential and must be turned on for about 10 to 12 hours everyday. As for their food, they are insectivores so it is best if you provide some gut-loaded crickets, mealworms or waxworms. Geckos do require two supplementary diet also, first is the calcium supplement which must be given in regular meals and then secondly, the multivitamin supplement which must be given at least once or twice a week. With regards in giving some water to drink, you may use a shallow dish. Remember to change the water in the dish regularly. For additional safety precaution, wash your hands before and after handling your pet to avoid any infectious disease. With the maintenance of the enclosure,just clean it at least once a week. Be watchful also with the health condition of your pet.
Pets are indeed so great to have in our life, but it is also a huge responsibility that might take effect on lifetime. Never ever decide on buying some exotic pet just for fun. Think it over and over again if you can comply all the requirements of being an exotic pet owner
