FAMOUS GECKO QUOTES. Did GECKO really say that?

CONFESSION: This post isn’t really about leopard geckos at all, but hey…

I just watched Wall Street again on DVD. Love that film. Oliver Stone used to be such a great film maker, why doesn’t he make them like this any more? While I’m ranting…why doesn’t Eddy Murphy, Dennis Miller and that other Dennis guy who used to rant on MTV do stand up any more?

Anyhow…my favorite Gordon Gecko quotes from Wall Street by the formerly great director Oliver Stone. I have to say that I googled these quotes, I’m not going to pause the DVD and write them down…that’s the kind of geeky stuff my brother does.  So here we go:

1. If you’re not inside, you’re outside
2. Lunch is for wimps
3. You stop sending me information and you start getting me some
4. There’s no nobility in poverty
5. Greed is good, greed is right, greed works.
6. Now you’re not naive enough to think that we’re living in a democracy, are you, buddy? It’s the free market and you’re part of it
7. When I get hold of the son of a bitch who leaked this, I’m gonna tear his eyeballs out and I’m gonna such his *bleep* skull
8. It’s not a question of enough. It’s a zero sum game, somebody wins, somebody loses. Money itself isn’t lost or made, it’s simply transferred from one perception to another.
9. Right in the *bleep* you *bleeping bleeping bleeping bleep*!
10. If you need a friend, get a dog
11. This is the kid, calls me 59 days in a row, wants to be a player. There ought to be a picture of you in the dictionary under persistence, kid
12. It’s all about buck, kid. The rest is conversation.

GECKO LOVE!

10 REASONS WHY LEOPARD GECKOS ARE THE PERFECT FIRST REPTILE PET (Maybe Even The Perfect First Pet!)

1. They are generally docile and calm creatures
2. Unlike other geckos, Leopard Geckos are ground dwellers so they can’t climb all over the place, up onto the ceiling etc
3. They don’t require too much care compared to other reptiles
4. They’re not ravenous eaters like other reptiles
5. They aren’t physically intimidating. They’re not going to scare off the neighbors.
6. They seldom bite (except for baby leopard geckos) or show any other dangerous behavior. The worst you’ll probably get is a growl and a mean stare.
7. If they do bite you, you’ll barely feel a scratch
8. They are more the type of pets that you look at and enjoy by viewing (kinda like fish) rather than constant handling/interactive play
9. They come in a wide variety of colors and patterns: so you can have so much fun picking them out

And of course…
10. They’re just so cute!

Leopard gecko handling…how to hold and handle your leopard gecko

Be very careful of handling a leopard gecko baby if you’re a novice. Most leopard gecko experts suggest waiting until the leopard gecko baby is at least 5 inches long (12.7cm) before you allow a child or novice to handle. If you’ve ever seen a teeny tiny leopard gecko up close you’ll see how delicate they are.

And although many owners handle their leopard geckos every day, often multiple times a day, the general advice is not to pick them up and play with them too much, 3-4 times a week being a rule of thumb. Of course, every gecko pet is different so you’ll have to use your judgement.

Just remember NEVER to pick them up by their tail. Or pull the tail. The leopard gecko tail might fall off with relative ease. Whilst that’s a normal defensive mechanism it gives the gecko a big shock and the tail never grows back as strong or in the same way.

Hold them gently, cupping your hand around their body and allow them to calm down and get used to you before moving them around.

PS: bonus tip: make sure you wash your hands before picking up your little lizard.

Find the perfect leopard gecko for you

So you’ve decided that leopard geckos are a suitable pet for you and you understand the responsibilities and how to take care of a leopard gecko (or at least you’re willing to learn!)

Now let’s consider the factors involved in picking out the perfect gecko pet.

HEALTH
This is the most important factor to consider. You will need to inspect your prospective new reptilian buddy from head to toe. More details in our leopard gecko health care section.

Let’s assume they’ve passed the all vital health check

COLOR

I think 99% of people will instinctively look at the color and patterning of the leopard gecko next. I definitely do. That’s one of the leopard gecko’s key attractions as a pet in the first place: their stunning and varied looks (pattern and color morphs). Leopard gecko fans often have strong preferences. I used to wonder why people choose patternless leopard geckos when there are so many color morphs to pick, but I’m beginning to understand their attraction too. There’s no guide to this, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Popular morphs include the Tremper Albino, Bell Albino, Eclipse, Blizzard.

AGE AND SIZE
Baby geckos can be a little grumpy and need special handling. If you’re a first-time owner you might consider a young adult which is at least over 6 months old and over 5 inches (12.7 cm) long

SEX
Buying either a male or female leopard gecko is fine as a first pet. If you’re thinking about buying more than one (I recommend starting off with one if you’re a beginner…you’ll become addicted and want another in no time anyway!!), just remember that two MALE leopard geckos cannot be housed together. They will fight and probably one will end up killing the other one. Male leopard gecko ultimate cage fighting! Avoid…!

CHARACTER/PERSONALITY
Most baby geckos are feisty so you can’t judge their personality if they’re too young. But once they are older (maybe 1 years old), their personalities really start to develop. Some can be more active, playful and responsive than others. Some are mega chilled-out…mellow and calm. Again, I think you’ll instinctively be attractive to the right personality for you. I wish I could say that about the guys I’ve dated….but that’s for another blog….:-)

CAN MY LEOPARD GECKO SHARE A VIVARIUM / CAGE EITHER WITH OTHER REPTILES?

Quick post this

I’m frequently asked if  you can house leopard geckos with other reptiles.

Easy answer this….NOT A GOOD IDEA!

You can house leopard geckos together if they are females but be careful to make sure they get on and it’s not a good idea to house males geckos together as  they can kill each other. Obviously if you house males and females together, you have to consider the possibility of them breeding and the responsibilities that go along with that.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A LEOPARD GECKO

  1. Leopard-like spots, dark brown on a white or pale background   hence the name
  2. Though now with leopard gecko breeding and morphing you can get many different patterns and colors
  3. Eyelids (unlike most other species of geckos)
  4. And they are moveable eyelids so they can blink and close their eyes
  5. Claws instead of toe pads
  6. No sticky pads on the bottom of their feet
  7. And that’s why they can’t climb smooth vertical surfaces
  8. Large ears
  9. About 6-10 inches in length (15cm to 25cm)
  10. Life span of up to 20 years
  11. Eat the skin they shed (I knew a boy at school who did the same too….bonus fact for you there)
  12. And yes…they’re unbelievably cute! (have I mentioned that before?!)
