How often can or should you take your gecko out?

I know some gecko pet owners take their little gecko pets out all the time so I guess it depends on the particular personality (and hardiness) of your little reptile pet.

Some leopard geckos love to chill out on the stomach on their owners, watching Friends re-runs.  Other prefer the warmth and comfort in the hood of a hoodie.

The general advice is to let newbie leopard geckos settle a bit first and then you might be able to expand their time out of the cage. After that, maybe 3-4 times a week you can let them out. You’ll have to let them out any way about once a week to clean their cage / vivarium / terrarium (otherwise known as home!)

Always be responsive and aware of your lizard’s state…if they are freaking out or looking stressed in any way, return them to the terrarium. There’s no place like home I guess.

My leopard gecko wont poop! What happens if your leopard gecko is impacted

Does your leopard gecko have problems in the ‘toilet’ department? Hasn’t pooped in more than 5 days or so?

You might start to get a little worried. It is a common problem…here’s a few common techniques you might wanna try (only try one at a time!):

They might be dehydrated to you can give them a little more water (via a syringe)

A warm soak and a gentle belly rub often does the trick (leopard gecko spa treatment!)

Geckos are very sensitive to smells and scents so it might be that they’ve smelt a change of smell. For example, you might have changed your perfume or soap, or they’re smelling the scent of someone else in the household. So it might take a few days for them to get back into a rhythm and find their pooping spot in the cage.

If you have another gecko, you could take a bit of their poop, wrap it up in a power towel and place it into the bunged-up gecko’s cage.

You can get a laxative from your vet

As always, if the problem persists, seek proper advice from an experienced vet.
